Vaginal infections are a common female problem. They are usually associated with changes in the acidity of the vaginal environment: when its pH changes towards alkaline, the protective barrier in the form of lactobacilli is weakened. The Vaginal pH Test allows to detect deviations from the normal pH of the vagina, which should be in a range of between 3.8 and 4.4. Raised pH indicates an ongoing intimate infection or an increased risk of infection. Increased vaginal pH level encourages the growth of harmful bacteria.
Maintaining vaginal health is especially important during pregnancy. An elevated pH (over 4.5) may indicate bacterial infection which is the common cause of premature birth. Regular testing is important to reduce the risk of infection as it may go unnoticed by the expecting mother.
